Iraq has formally asked the United States to launch airstrikes against the Islamic militants who have seized several key cities in the north of the country. US military commander General Martin Dempsey has told a Senate hearing it is in America's interest to stop the ISIS militants. President Obama is meeting Congressional leaders to update them on the crisis. 

 

An 18-year-old man has been shot dead in Sydney's west overnight. The man was found in a street in Carleton; he has been shot once in the upper body and died later in hospital. Police say it's not clear whether the man knew his attackers but they believe he was targeted. 

 

Julian Assange says the US Attorney General Eric Holder should end his investigation into WikiLeaks or resign. The WikiLeaks founder made the call during an Internet address to the media from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. It's now two years since Mr. Assange took refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden over those sexual assault claims.
