 BHP Billiton is looking at cutting thousands of jobs from its iron ore operation in Western Australia. BHP Billiton has employed external consultants to conduct a review in order to cut costs. The company says jobs are likely to go as a result of this, but won’t put a figure on it. The ABC understands up to 3,000 jobs could go from its iron ore division which currently employs 16,000 people. Many of the job losses though are expected to be contractors whose positions are coming to an end. 

 
The talks between South African Voolworths and Australian business Solomon Lew for control of Australia’s retail brand has escalated. Voolworths says it wants to buy Mr. Lew’s stake in fashion label Country Road which they jointly own for a premium. The offer conditions on whether Voolworths’ takeover of David Jones goes ahead. Solomon Lew recently bought a large stake in David Jones, many believed in the market that Mr. Lew bought into David Jones to force Voolworths to buy out his Country Road shares.
 
The Australian share market has been wiped down by retailers in banking store.
