Since Wednesday, strong winds and downpours have inundated many main roads in the Fuzhou city with meter-deep floods in Jiangxi province. The inaccessible roads have stranded vehicles and passengers. Trash cans floated down water clogged streets, fallen trees and billboards lay everywhere. The local weather authority says the rain and winds are are expected to last another day.
"Heavy rain and severe rainstorm will be seen on Thursday and Friday. Rainstorms will weaken starting Friday, but sporadic areas in our province will still be hit by additional downpours," Xu Aihua, weather forecaster with Jiangxi Meteorological Station, said.
The local flood prevention authority, land resources and transportation bureaus are working all out to prevent potential hazards from turning into tragedies.
Matmo has also caused some bullet trains from Nanjing to Shenzhen to suspend operations. On Thursday, eight trains on the coastal railway line suspended operation. Another train will be cancelled on Friday.
"The strong typhoon may affect the railway facilities along the coastal railway. So for the safety of trains and passengers, we decided to suspend some trains along the route," Guan Chunbao, chief of Nanjing Station, Shanghai Railway Bureau, said.
Matmo blasted east China’s Fujian province on Thursday but most of the affected cities have seen water levels recede. Weather forecasters, however, have issued a warning for 3-meter waves on the Yellow Sea and Bohai Bay in eastern China on Thursday and Friday. |
