General Martin Dempsey said a key role of the American troops in Iraq is to assess whether the country's security forces can hold together and whether its leaders are confident they can do their jobs. Dempsey told reporters that the 750 troops will help determine what the United States might do next to help Iraq fight an insurgency. Hong Kong police arrested more than 500 people after tens of thousands joined a massive march to push for democracy. Police said those arrested had been unlawfully assembled and prevented police from carrying out their duties.
4 people were killed when their cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Nairobi, Kenya. Officials said preliminary investigations found the plane was flying low after takeoff and might have hit an electrical pole before crashing.
They captured the hearts of America and soccer fans but the U.S. will have to wait to capture the World Cup. Belgium beat the U.S. men's team, scoring twice in extra time and then held on for a 2-1 win, ousting the U.S. from the tournament.
