Australian Federal Police have called off their mission to secure the MH17 crash site due to fierce fighting between the Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe says it's too risky to send in an observer mission. Meanwhile the first victim of the disaster has been identified as a Dutch citizen. A 24-hour ceasefire in Gaza is in tatters this morning with fighting between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces continuing just hours after Hamas proposed a new truce. Israel accused Hamas of firing rockets into its territory. More than 1,000 Palestinians 45 Israelis have now been killed in recent weeks.
A group of Tamil asylum seekers at the center of a High Court challenge have arrived in Australia. One hundred and fifty-seven asylum seekers including 37 children were held on an Australian customs vessel for several weeks. The government says they are now being brought to Australia to be interviewed by Indian officials.
People on the dole could be forced to conduct 40 job searches a month and carry out up to 25 hours a week of community work under a proposed change to that scheme. The government wants to extend the program making it mandatory for all job seekers under 50 unless they are in specified training.
And the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner has made its final voyage to the Port of Genova where it'll be dismantled. The ship capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio 2.5 years ago killing 32 people. |
