The Japanese delegation said they travelled to the DPRK to learn in detail about the latest investigation into the abduction of Japanese citizens by the DPRK in the 1970s and 80s. The DPRK has refused to disclose details of the two-day meetings, or whether a new round of negotiations will be held in the near future.

In July the DPRK announced the establishment of a special committee tasked with probing the fate of the kidnapped Japanese citizens. In return, Japan eased several sanctions on the DPRK.
