Leading the news, a Brisbane man is in a serious condition in hospital this morning after he was shot by police during a domestic dispute overnight. Police say the man in his 40s was shot several times when he allegedly ran to them with a saw at a house in Ashgrove in the city’s north. It is the latest in a spate of police shootings in Queensland over recent months. “There was(were) two officers who came to the address in relation to domestic violence inquiry. We are positive he had a weapon and that gain is part of the investigation.”
The Prime Minister says he’s prepared to sweat blood as he gets support for a referendum to recognize Indigenous Australians in the constitution. Tony Abbott wants the vote to coincide with a 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum that gave aborigines full citizenship rights.
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce says he expects other banks to follow the ANZ’s lead to offer some relief to drought-affected farmers. The ANZ has agreed to hold off repossessing farms in parts of New South Wales and Queensland for the next 12 months.
And the dark comedy Birdman has topped the list of nominations of the Golden Globes. The film which stars Michael Keaton as a washed-up film star tried to revive his career has bagged seven nominations. On the small screen, Fargo came out on top with five nominations. |
