Three people have emerged from the siege in Sydney's central business district.Two hostages ran through the front entrance of the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.another came out from the fire exit.An armed man is still holding a number of other people captive.The New South Wales police commissioner has called the siege consistent with a terrorist attack.but says officers are still working to determine the motive.Hostage negotiators have made contact with the offender. A man inside the cafe was captured on film showing a black flag with white Arabic writing,the text read "there is not God but Allah" and "Mohammed is the messenger of God." The New South Wales police commissor says authorities are still investigating the flag.
The prime minister has urged Australians to go about their business as usual.The national security committee of cabinet was briefed this morning and is meeting again this afternoon.Tony Abbott has labelled the siege "deeply concerning" but he says police and security agencies are well equipped to respond. |
