The Australian share market finished lower ahead of some key US job numbers due tonight. Mining stocks were the main drag on trade. By the close, the All Ords was down 1/10 of a percent or 5 points. As were the ASX 200 index. To the Movers, and gold miner Regis was down the most on the ASX, off 26%. Fortscue dropped 6%. Resmed and Lend Lease are among the better performers. Telstra was weaker. And the Australian dollar is buying 78 US cents. BHP Billiton has responded to its likely inclusion as a subject of a Senate inquiry into corporate corruption. Labor Senator Sam Dastyari told the Senate last night the inquiry would examine allegations that BHP attempted to bribe Chinese officials during 2008 Beijing Olympics. A BHP spokesperson says the company is already cooperating with the Australian federal police and other authorities. A senior National Australian Bank official has denied reports the bank has systemic misconduct problems. The bank has paid almost 15 million dollars in compensation to more than 750 customers because of advice from Nab /. More than 40 advisers have been sacked or resigned following allegations of forgery and doctoring customer files. |
