 This is Scientific American-60 Seconds Science.I’m Julia Roson.Got a minute?The world’s mountain glaciers contain just 1%of all the ice on earth.But their rapid melting accounts for about a third season sea level rise.Most of these glaciers that started on land shrink away gradual surface melting.But others know it terra-water glaciers flow out into the sea and by caving out massive icebergs.These glaciers can clapse in a bleak of eye.Geologically speaking,for example,the Columbia glacier in the Glasgow *.It is a terra-water glacier that once failed along field,it should treat 12 miles in just the last 25years.So this tiny little glacier in the Glasgow capable of producing 1%of the sales rise budget.And so we know that individual caring glaciers can do crazy things,can actually dramatically can have this rapid response * ,a glaciologist with the US geological survin incurage and core other new studies in a journal geographical research letter.Scientists stop the terrra-water glaciers because of its unstable behavior might be an important source of the terra-water flowing out of Glasgow and West Canada for ice disappearing in special alarming rates.But all mountain glacier ,terra-water and other ice are notoriously hard to quantify.So * his colleagues undertook the daunting task of accessing of every glacier in the region.It is a date-collect from air planes that they treck hard messages about 116 glaciers making up 41% of Glasgow ice covered area changed during 2 decades.Then they use similarities in the shape,size and location of the remaining  27,000 glaciers to estimate how those change,too.The results surprised them.Terra-water glaciers accounted for just 6%of the region’s total ice source.The vast majority came from the surface melting of glaciers that second place on land.”So your initial response is wow!This is great.The rerra-water glaciers actually are doing now much in Glasow.””That sounds like good news.Because terra -water glaciers can shed a lot of ice really quickly.But scientists suspect that sea level contribution of terra-water glacier is going to wane down near future if they retrieve *onto land.But the surface melt part is going to decrease.What we all know drives most of the region’s ice loss.It means that while we have more certainly about what’s happening ,we also ,that means more certainly that the Glasow’s contribution can stay the same growth,if climate continues to warm.Thanks for the minute for Scientific American-60 seconds science,I’m Julia Roson.
