During the war, Israel seized the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights. 1999In Europe, Yugoslav troops leave the province of Kosovo, prompting NATO to suspend its punishing air strikes after 78 days. 1935Alcoholics Anonymous, the voluntary support group for recovering alcoholics, is founded in Akron, Ohio.

Singer and pianist Ray Charles dies of liver disease at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Charles, who helped pioneer what became known as soul music was 73.
