 February 2nd 1943, a major victory for the Soviets Union during World War II, as the last of Nazi Germany’s forces in the Battle of Stalingrad, surrender. The Nazi’s and axis partner lost some 800,000 troops in a month-long battle. The Soviets lost more than a million soldiers.

1971, Idi Amin  seizes power through a military coup in the east African country of Uganda. His brutal eight-year regime is believed to have killed hundreds of thousands of people.
1882, James Joyce, the Irish author whose works include Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake, is born in Dublin.
1996, “I am singing in the rain, just singing in the rain.” Gene Kelly,  dancer, actor and choreographer of “Singin’ in the Rain” theme, dies in Beverly Hills, California. He was 83. And 1979, punk rock musician Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols,  dies of a drug overdose in New York. He was 21.
