This is AP News Minute. 1. Pope Francis concluded his visit to Washington DC, the first stop on his three-city tour in the US. Earlier, Francis addressed Congress, calling for an end to the death penalty and again stressing the need to take steps to combat climate change. The pope will be in New York until Saturday morning when he heads to Philadelphia. 2. A horrific stampede at the annual haj pilgrimage on the outskirts of the holy city of Mecca killed at least 717 and injured hundreds more. The tragedy occurred in Mina, a large valley where pilgrims carry out the symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing pebbles against three stone columns. 3. Columbia President Juan Manuel Santos announced that his government and the * group Revolutionary Armed Force of Columbia would reach a peace deal in six months. Santos made the announcement in Cuba’s capital, where both sides have been meeting for peace talks for three years. 4. The self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic held their first day of a tank driving competition in eastern Ukraine. Spectators gathered to watch the giant armor machines being maneuvered around the course of fight flags. |
