Reporter: The bolt is loaded. He is the fastest man on earth at the moment and this is what happened at the World Athletics Championship in Berlin. Reporter: The world hundred metre final. Set. They get away first time, Tyson get right alongside Usain Bolt but here he goes streaking away already, it’s Bolt all the way, he’s looking round, watch the clock, it’s Gold for Bolt and again, he’s done it again! A new world record for Usain Bolt! Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds is simply unbelievable. Well, Leon Baptiste is a British 100-metre sprinter. Here he explains what he thinks makes Bolt such an incredible runner. It was amazing, no one has seen that time before, it’s a world record, it’s the way that he’d done it. He’s got personality. And it was really amazing, he has really set the standard now. Well, if you look at Usain Bolt’s run, he’s technically, he’s probably the best, execution from the blocks. His stride length is really good. These are the sort of things that myself and all these up and coming sprinters are working on and that’s what we aspire to be. Dr. Dan Toon is a sports technologist at the research centre and here he talks about the secret of running shoes. We use a laser to cinder the powder, in order to make these sole units, the same technology that’s been used to make fighter aircraft. And each athlete can have a stiffness which is exacting to their requirement. So some athletes might have a really really flexible shoe, one which is really really bendy. And some athletes might have one like this which is incredibly stiff. And those differences might be incredibly small, we might be talking hundredths of a second, but that might be the difference between first and second place over a hundred meters. |
