A major conference, The 2015 Conference on Big Data Index of Culture and Entertainment Industry, was held on Friday in Beijing, during which awards were given to the most talked about TV series, online dramas, movies and variety shows in China. Monkey King: Hero is Back, The Witness, Tiny Times 4, Monster Hunt and Forever Young were the most talked about movies on the Chinese Internet, while Nirvana in Fire, The Disguiser, Ordinary World, Tiger Mom and Hey Daddy were the winners when it came to TV series.

The big data collected by iMiner includes data from the Internet, the industry and third-party partners. Data was collected from over 3,200 portals, 100 mainstream communities, 450 print media outlets, 30 streaming sites and social media platforms like Sina Weibo from November 31, 2014 to November 31, 2015.

At the conference, You Xiaogang, the president of the China Television Drama Production Industry Association and also the director of TV dramas such as Xiaozhuang Mishi, called 2015 a year of transformation.

Last year, box office revenue in China grew by 48.7 percent to reach 44 billion yuan ($6.68 billion). Meanwhile, with its 15,000 episodes produced last year, China became the largest producer of TV series in the world.

"I think big data is very important nowadays. It solves some problems with what we called comprehensive analyses in the past. It can pick out some discrete elements and produce data from some cases that can then be used in new applications," said You Xiaogang, adding that he feels big data can help studios find their way.

"Many people are focusing on big data and studying how important it is. I feel that it is important, but it is not the only thing that is important. We can’t look at it as a predictive science, nor should we believe that we will succeed just because we’ve collected big data," Ma Zhongjun, the CEO of Ciwen Media said at the conference, explaining that big data takes affects about 60-70 percent of his studio’s decisions.

Ma’s company produces The Journey of Flower series, which aired last summer. In his opinion, the most effective use of big data is helping studios find audiences.

"It helps us when it comes to choosing a story, purchasing novels, selecting the cast and crew, deciding on what platform we should release on and how to market a series," he said giving an example of how the use of big data helped them figure out what kind of hero female audiences liked the best, which then influenced the creation of the main male character of the show.
