The Justice Department filed a civil rights lawsuit Mondy against North Carolina and its governor over the law restricting the use of public restrooms by transgender people. This comes after governor Pat McCrory filed his own lawsuit earlier in the day to keep the law in place.

Cold temperatures and light rain have helped to stablize the massive wildfire in Canada. The break in the weather has officials optimistic they can begin the next phase of a plan to get residents back into the oil sands town of Fort McMurray.

The New Jersey store that sold the winning ticket for the 429.6-million dollar Powerball jackpot is celebrating. The winner has yet to come forward, but the 7-Eleven store owner got a $30,000 check Monday for selling the winning ticket.

And for the first time in 10 years, Mercury passed directly between the Earth and the Sun. NASA provided images of the rare transit of Mercury, the smallest planet appearing as a tiny black dot on the face of the Sun.
