This is AP news minute. 1. Eric Fanning was sworn in as the new army secretary Wednesday, making him first openly gay leader at U.S military service. Fanning's long stalled nomination was approved by the senate on Tuesday. 2. Massive landslides triggered by torrential rains burned homes in 3 villages in central hills of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's red cross said more than 200 families were missing Wednesday. 3. A man was shot to death by police in Manhattan after he became belligerent as he tried to buy beer in a grocery store. The man pulled out an 8-inch knife that he refused to drop. It was not clear whether he has a mental illness or a criminal record. 4. French police took to the streets in about 60 cities across France to denounce the hatred and violence they say is being directed to death, during a year daily protesting against labor reform.
