She plays on the LPGA Tour in the USA and is probably the best Mexican golfer of all time. She is Mexico’s only golfer to be ranked number one in the world. She is also one of Mexico’s highest earners and the perfect role model for Mexican girls hoping to make it big in sports.
It seems as though Ochoa was born to be a golfer. She grew up next door to the Guadalajara Country Club. She won her first national tournament when she was just seven. She won an impressive 44 national junior events. She showed the world she meant business by winning five Junior World Championships in a row.
Ochoa was on the up-and-up and she won award after award. In November 2001, Mexican President Vicente Fox presented her with Mexico's National Sports Award. She was the youngest person and first golfer to receive Mexico's highest sporting prize. She also bagged the 2003 Nancy Lopez Award, which is presented to the world's most outstanding female amateur golfer.
Ochoa turned professional and joined the LPGA Tour in 2003. She finished her rookie season ninth on the LPGA money list. A year later she won her first two LPGA titles. She claimed the title of golf’s top woman by winning six tournaments in 2007 and topping the money list. There is an LPGA tournament named after her – the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. |
