George Walker Bush served as the 43rd President of the United States, from 2001 to 2009. He was born on July 6, 1946, in Connecticut, to George H.W. Bush – later the 41st President of the United States. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale in 1968 and then served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He got a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975.

 

Following graduation, Bush began a career in the energy business. After working on his father’s successful 1988 Presidential campaign, President Bush assembled a group of partners that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in 1989. He entered politics and was the 46th Governor of Texas, serving from 1995 to 2000 - the first Governor in Texas history to be elected to consecutive 4-year terms.

 

Bush won the Presidency in 2000. He worked to extend freedom, opportunity, and security at home and abroad. His first initiative as President was the No Child Left Behind Act, a bipartisan measure that attempted to raise standards in schools. He also cut taxes for every taxpayer and implemented free trade agreements with more than a dozen nations.

 

The most significant event of Bush’s tenure came on September 11, 2001, when terrorists killed nearly 3,000 people in the 9/11 attacks. He declared a War on Terror and invaded Afghanistan to end the Taliban regime and find Osama bin Laden. He later invaded Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that did not exist. Bush returned to his Texas ranch after leaving office and is now a public speaker.
