　　"Now, now," Helmholtz protested.

　　“好了，好了。”赫姆霍尔兹抗议道。

　　There was a silence. In spite of their sadness–because of it, even;

　　沉默。三个年轻人尽管痛苦，反倒快活起来了，

　　for their sadness was the symptom of their love for one another–the three young men were happy.

　　"I went to see the Controller this morning," said the Savage at last.

　　“今天早上我去看了总统。”野蛮人终于说话了。

　　What for?

　　说什么？

　　To ask if I mightn't go to the islands with you.

　　"And what did he say?" asked Helmholtz eagerly.

　　The Savage shook his head. "He wouldn't let me."

　　野蛮人摇摇头。“他不让我去。”

　　Why not?

　　为什么不让？

　　"He said he wanted to go on with the experiment. But I'm damned," the Savage added, with sudden fury,

　　“他说他想继续做实验。可是我他妈的是不会干的，”野蛮人突然发起脾气来，说，

　　I'm damned if I'll go on being experimented with.

　　我才不愿意给他当什么混账的实验品呢。

　　Not for all the Controllers in the world. l shall go away tomorrow too.

　　就算全世界的总统都来求我我也不干。我明天也拔腿走人。

　　"But where?" the others asked in unison.

　　“可是你到哪儿去？”两人同时问。

　　The Savage shrugged his shoulders. "Anywhere. I don't care. So long as I can be alone."

　　野蛮人耸耸肩。“哪儿都可以去，我不在乎。只要能够孤独就行。”

　　From Guildford the down-line followed the Wey valley to Godalming,

　　下行线路是从纪尔福德沿威谷到果答明，

　　then, over Milford and Witley, proceeded to Haslemere and on through Petersfield towards Portsmouth.

　　Roughly parallel to it, the upline passed over Worplesden, Tongham, Puttenham, Elstead and Grayshott.

　　而大体与此平行的上行路线则要经过华波斯顿、同安、帕特南、爱尔丝特和格雷莎等地。

　　Between the Hog's Back and Hindhead there were points where the two lines were not more than six or seven kilometres apart.
