Iraqi troops and federal police celebrated in Mosul Sunday with the battle for the city appearing to be drawing to a close. After eight months of grueling battles, the Mosul old city neighborhood is the Islamic State group's last stand in Iraq's second largest city.

A Pennsylvania man is in custody for what a prosecutor called "the savage and senseless death" of a recent high school graduate shot in the head during a road rage confrontation. David Desper turned himself in, accompanied by an attorney.

Canadians in Ottawa celebrated Canada Day over the weekend with a display of fireworks. The night-sky display in Canada's capital was meant to honor the country's 150th birthday.
