China and India are stepping up engagement in trade and investment, despite an historical border dispute. This follows President Xi Jinping's meeting in New Delhi with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Deals worth billions of dollars on India's railways and industrial parks have been signed. Reports say China is investing 20 billion U.S. dollars in India's infrastructure over five years. Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi after visiting Modi's home state of Gujarat. The trip to India is Xi Jinping's first since taking office in March of last year. It's also the first state visit by a Chinese president to India in 8-years. Chinese President Xi Jinping says China will open a new route via the Himalayan Nathu La Pass for Indian pilgrims traveling to Tibet. He is currently in New Delhi on a state visit. The Nathu La Pass sits more-than 45-hundred meters above sea level. Indian Buddhist followers make pilgrimages to Tibet every year using this pass. While addressing the Indian Council of World Affairs, President Xi says China has decided to add the new route for Indian pilgrims to facilitate their trip and further promote exchanges between the two countries. |
