Leaders from more than a hundred countries have made promises of billions of dollars and better care of planet Earth, during the UN Climate Summit in New York.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon challenged the leaders to set a new course for a warming world and reverse the rise of heat-trapping gases.

At the summit, Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli says China will take on international responsibilities that are commensurate with China's national conditions and actual capabilities.

Speaking as President Xi Jinping's special envoy, Zhang Gaoli says China will announce its post-2020 action plan on climate change as soon as possible,

The measures are expected to include marked progress in reducing carbon intensity, increasing the share of non-fossil fuels, and raising the forest stock.

A former instructor at Beijing's Minzhu University has been sentenced to life in prison for promoting separatism in western China's Xinjiang and encouraging ethnic Uygurs to use violence.

A court in Urumqi convicted Ilham Tohti of using a website to promote his separatist cause.

He was also accused of organizing the publication of articles inciting ethnic hatred by distorting the facts around a number of riots and disputes in Xinjiang and Beijing.

The sentence comes on the heels of a series of explosions which killed two people and left a number of others injured in the southeast part of Xinjiang over the weekend.
