Lesson 64 Stories of the elephant II. 第六十四课 大象的故事(二) In the city of Delhi, in India, a tailor was in the habit of giving some fruit to an elephant, 在印度的新德里市,一位裁缝习惯于
that daily passed the place where he sat at work. 在他每天上班经过的地方喂大象水果吃。
So accustomed had the animal become to this, that it regularly put its trunk in at the window, to receive the expected gift. 大象逐渐养成了习惯,经常将鼻子伸向窗外,等待礼物的到来。
One day, however, the tailor, being out of humour, thrust his needle into the elephant's trunk, 然而有一天,裁缝心情不好,他将他的针刺入了大象的鼻子,
telling it to be gone, as he had nothing to give it. 让大象走开,因为那天他没有带水果给大象吃。
The elephant passed quietly on; but on coming to a pool of dirty water near by, it filled its trunk and returned. 大象静静走开了,来到了附近的一个污水池,把鼻子装满了水,然后回来了。
Thrusting its huge head in at the window, it half drowned the poor tailor by pouring a flood of water over him, 然后将自己的大头伸入到窗户,将鼻子里的水喷向裁缝,可怜的裁缝几乎溺水了,
to the great amusement of those who witnessed the scene! 但是其他看到这一幕的人却笑开了花。
An army in India was marching up a hill. The large guns, which were very heavy, were drawn by elephants. 印度的一支军队正在向山上行军。大象托着沉重巨大的枪支。
There was a long train of those animals in regular file, one close behind the other, each drawing its piece of artillery. 在常规文件中记录了那些在长途列车中的动物,一个挨着一个,每个动物都拖着一门大炮。
On the carriage of one of the guns a soldier was sitting, a little in front of a wheel. 一节车厢中的一名士兵的枪,在方向盘前面。
The man, being very tired, dropped asleep, and fell from his seat. 那个男人因为非常累而睡着了,从自己的座位上摔了下来。
The wheel of the carriage, loaded with its heavy gun, was just on the point of rolling over his body. 车轮载着沉重的枪支,马上就要滚到他的身体上了。
There was no time to get him out of the way. 但是已经没有时间将他移到别的地方了。
The elephant in the rear, seeing the danger, but unable to reach the man with its trunk, 在车轮后面的大象,看到了这一危险,但是用鼻子也够不到那个男人,
seized the wheel, and lifting it up, passed it carefully over him, and set it down a little beyond! 抓住了车轮,然后将其吊起来,小心翼翼地将车轮扔到了那个男人的前面,将车轮放在稍微远一点的地方。 |
