I heard a low cry and, looking down. I saw a man lying on his back with a pile of earth over his legs.

这时，我听到一个低沉的叫喊声。我向下望去，看到一个人仰卧在地上，双腿被埋在土里。

Sliding down, I soon reached his side, and what was my surprise to look into the face of my own good master!

我滑下战壕，很快到达他的身边，让我惊讶的是，我看到的竟是我主人的面庞！

I dared not bark; so I licked his face and his hands and wagged my tail very hard.

我不敢大叫；于是我舔他的脸和手，并使劲儿摇尾巴。

Soon he opened his eyes and saw me.

他很快睁开了眼睛，看到了我。

Oh, joy! he knew me at once; for a good master always knows his own dog, just as a good dog always knows his own master.

啊，太好了！他马上认出了我；因为一个好的主人总是认识自己的狗，就像一只好狗也总是认识自己的主人一样。

Good old Jacques, he said, "how did you ever get here?"

好家伙，老雅克，他说，你怎么到这儿来了？

How happy I was to hear him speak those words!

听到他说这些话，我好高兴啊！

I stood close by my master's side, so that he could help himself from my little saddle.

我紧靠在主人的身边，这样他就能从我背的小马鞍里自己拿东西了。

"Come on the other side, old fellow," he said. "This arm feels strange."

老伙计，转到这边来。他说，这只胳膊有点不对劲儿。

So I went around to the other side, while he drank something from a little bottle that he found in one of my pockets.

于是我转到了另一边，他在我的一个袋子里找到一个小瓶子，喝了一些里面的东西。

Then, finding paper and a pencil, he wrote a few words.

接着，他找了一张纸和一支笔，在纸上写了儿句话。

"A letter to my mistress," thought I. "I'll take it to her as soon as I can."

这肯定是给我的女主人的一封信。我想，我会尽快把这个带给她。

There was water in the ditch, and the pain in my leg made me want a cool drink, but I dared not stop for this.

战壕里有水，腿部的疼痛使我想喝点儿凉水，但是为了主人的事，我不敢耽搁。
