Then she heard the sound again--soft footsteps behind her.

接着，她又听到了那种声音--一在她身后响起的轻柔的脚步声。

A minute before, she had wished for someone to come along. Now she wanted to run, but fear held her still.

刚才她还盼望着能有什么人跟她这组走过来，然而现在她想到的是逃跑，只是由于恐惧她站在那里一动也不能动。

The footsteps seemed close now. Then a man's voice came out of the darkness.

脚步声这会儿好像近了。接着，黑暗中传来了一个男人的声音。

'Is anybody there?' Polly hesitated.

“有人吗？”波莉犹豫了一下。

At last she answered, 'Hello, I think I'm lost.'

最后，她还是说话了：“你好，我想我是迷路了。”

A few seconds later, a hand reached out and grasped her arm.

没过几秒钟，有一只手伸了过来，抓住了她的胳膊。

Polly found herself staring up at the face of an old man with a beard.

波莉抬头看去，发现是一位长着络腮胡子的老人。

'Maybe I can help you. Which road do you want?' he asked.

“也许我能帮你。你要去哪条路？” 他问。

'I live at 86 King Street,' Polly replied.

“我住在国王街86号。” 波莉答道。
