American defense officials told NBC News an unknown number of U.S. Special Operations Forces were killed or wounded in two separate incidents in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The officials said a U.S. medevac chopper called in to recover casualties came under mortar and small-arms fire.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials added it was not clear if the helicopter had been hit by enemy fire or whether any casualties were sustained in the landing zone.
