President Xi Jinping has inspected the resumption of work and production in Zhejiang, a major foreign trade province in China. The president visited an area of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the world's top container ports. He also made a stop at an industrial park in Ningbo City, which produces high-end auto parts and molds. A vice general manager of Hubei Airport Group says most airports in the hardest-hit province by the COVID-19 outbreak all stand ready to resume regular operation. Luo Guowei says the airports will continue to strengthen pandemic prevention and control work. "First, we will closely monitor the passengers' body temperature. Second, we will pay attention to the sterilization of all facilities in the terminals. Third, we will make sure that passengers keep a distance from one another when they are checking in or waiting to board planes. And fourth, we will keep reminding passengers and airport staff of the measures in corresponding processes to avoid all risks." The official adds that the airports have set up a joint database with various institutions to fully trace the passengers' travels, in case that all measures may fail to detect virus carriers without symptoms. China has sent a team of 12 medical experts to Laos to assist the country's fight against the COVID-19 outbreak. The team consists of experts specialized in infectious disease, nursing, virus testing and traditional Chinese medicine from hospitals in China's Yunnan Province and the provincial center for disease control and prevention. The medical team has brought medical supplies donated by the local government, including medicines, nucleic acid testing kits, over 10,000 N95 masks, 60,000 medical masks and 6,000 protective suits. Johns Hopkins University says the number of COVID-19 infections has exceeded 700-thousand globally. The university says over 33-thousand people have died from the disease. The update also shows that the United States has the most confirmed cases, which have surged to more than 132-thousand. White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx is urging governors and mayors to prepare for a surge in COVID-19 cases. "I think at this moment we're asking every single governor and every single mayor to prepare, like New York is preparing now, know where every hospital is public, private, know where every one of your surgical centers are, that's where your anesthesia ventilators are. Know how to change those anesthesia ventilators up to supportive ventilators to take care of people." New York has prepared thousands of temporary hospital beds and has made plans for large numbers of people to be diagnosed and treated with the coronavirus. A shortage of ventilators in several major cities worsened. The U.S. death count crossed 2,100 on Saturday, more than double the level from two days ago. The country has now recorded more than 123,000 cases of COVID-19, the most of any country in the world. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will need hundreds more ventilators in a few days and more masks, gowns and other supplies by next week. Canada will increase funding for youth, senior and victims of abuse affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says this will help vulnerable people during this crisis. "For far too many people, home isn't a safe place to be. For others, it's somewhere they're isolated and alone. And for too many more, they have no place to go at all. You've been hunkered down with your parents and you are watching the world you know change radically, it's a source of anxiety and it's a source of tension. Trudeau says his government will spend over 145 million US dollars on additional help for vulnerable people such as the homeless, women and children. Canada has over 5,800 confirmed coronavirus cases and 63 people have died from the virus. Almost half of the country's cases are in Quebec, but authorities say the incidences of new cases seem to be stabilizing. England's Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jenny Harries says Britons may be subject to some form of lockdown measures for six months or longer. "I think three weeks for review, two or three months to see whether we've really squashed it; but about three to six months ideally, and lots of uncertainty in that; but then to see at which point we can actually get back to normal and it is plausible that it could go further than that." She warns that the country may face a second wave of coronavirus if the lockdown is lifted too quickly. |
