German authorities are questioning a man thought to be the driver of a truck that ploughed into crowds at a Christmas market in Berlin. At least 12 people were killed and 50 others injured. Germany's interior minister says there are indications it was a deliberate attack while Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop says her department had warned tourists three days ago, that German Christmas markets were vulnerable to attacks.

The Russian president vVadimir Putin has offered condolences to the family of the assassinated Russian ambassador to Turkey. Andrey Karlov was shot in the back whilst speaking at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital Ankara. The assailant was shot and killed by security forces. Mr Putin says the attack is a provocation aimed at derailing ties between Russia and Turkey.

A report into the New South Wales police bugging scandal has been highly critical of the state's deputy commissioner, Catherine Burn. It's found Ms burn's deployment of an undercover informant in 1999 amounts to unlawful conduct though the acting ombudsman won't say whether any findings have been referred to the DPP.

And former Billabong chief executive Matthew Perrin has been found guilty of a multi-million-dollar fraud. The 44 year old had been accused of forging his ex-wife's signature back in 2008 to dishonestly obtain more than 13 million dollars from the Commonwealth Bank. He's been remanded in custody.
