The governing body of the Church of England has voted by a 2:1 majority to allow the ordination of Women Bishops. About 1300 clergy have threatened to leave the church if safeguards will not agree to reassure traditionalists. Here's our religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott. This protracted debate has produced a historic result. What was in doubt this morning now seems all but certain that women will be ordained as bishops in the Church of England. The vote was conclusive in all three Houses of the Synod and was accompanied by emotional scenes . It provided only for a 'Code of Practice' giving as-yet unspecified exemptions for traditionalists who do not want to serve under a woman bishop. One Bishop and several clergy were in tears, and others prayed silently. The result has been greeted with joy by women and liberals who say that a long discrimination against women has been broken. Shares in the Internet company Yahoo! have jumped by more than 10% following comments by the software giant Microsoft that it was willing to reopen talks to buy all or part of the company.
