Screaming Mobile Phones

THE HOST: A British-based company has developed a cell phone that deters thieves by literally screaming should it be stolen. Synchronica is a firm that manages mobile phones for service providers and businesses. It installs software on handsets allowing administrators to remotely disable the phones and get them screaming. Well the firm's Karsten Brinkshurt came in earlier and he was armed with one of his mobile manager equipped phones.

KARSTEN: The mobile manager is absolutely invisible. You can't even see it. You need to install it once and it runs in the background and it just sits there and it waits to be triggered by a server which then enables the server to control the device remotely.

THE HOST: And I suppose it becomes visible not really to us the user but to somebody who might steal it, to a thief. So can we see that in action?

KARSTEN: Ah yes we can see that in action. So in case the device gets lost or stolen, what I can do, I can call my system administrator and he then remotely takes control of that device using the sonic mobile manager server application. And then basically he puts the device into a lock mode so that it basically prevents unauthorised usage. He can delete the data off the device and he can put it into scream mode which will annoy the thief very much.

THE HOST: So at the moment then the phone is switched on and …

KARSTEN: I can use it. I can place a phone call. There is nothing special about the phone but now our IT administrator will activate the lock feature. That means I can no longer place a phone call, I can't access the email, I can't access the calendar or contact data stored on the phone and then he will also activate the scream mode so this will be really annoying, I guess.

THE HOST: That is just a horrible noise. So this is your phone, now obviously the network provider realises that it's gone missing and this has been remotely activated.

KARSTEN: Actually yes, it has been remotely activated and the device is showing a screen which says it is locked and you can use it only to place emergency calls. But you will not be able to use it as a normal phone. And as you can hear, it's putting out a very annoying tone.

THE HOST: It's unbearable. Well, I suppose the whole point is that you can't really switch it off, can you? No… It would defeat the object if you could switch it off.

KARSTEN: I can't switch it off. He has to do it remotely.

A WOMAN: Let me take the phone out of the studio so that we can carry on with the interview.

THE HOST: And just annoy everyone in the science unit. The whole point is that you can't switch it off so our producer has had to take it out into the office and somebody somewhere is going to have to de-activate that phone. But I have thought of a catch thought. Surely the thief will just take the battery out, won't they?

KARSTEN: Yes, I mean if the thief is able to take out the battery, then of course the software will no longer be able to sound that scream, right? But as soon as he puts the battery in, the device boots up and the device will go into lock and scream mode again.

THE HOST: Yes I was going to say that if you take the battery out, surely you can reboot the device and help yourself to it.

KARSTEN: No, if you reboot the device, the mobile manager client will realise that the device is still in lock and scream mode and continue to scream.

主持人：是的。不过我想说的是，如果你把电池取出来了，那么你就可以重新启动设备，随意使用它了。

卡斯滕：不是这样的。如果你重启设备，移动管理程序就会识别到手机仍处在锁定状态和尖叫模式，那么它就会继续尖叫。
