West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff has issued an emotional apology, after being wiped out for the rest of the season for punching Fremantle's Andrew Brayshaw behind play. Gaff — who had been one of the favourites for this year's Brownlow medal — has been handed an eight week ban by the AFL tribunal overnight.

Two bushfires in California have merged to create the largest blaze ever seen in the state. The fires have engulfed around 115-thousand hectares, and is expected to burn for the rest of the month. International teams of firefighters, including Australians, are part of the almost 15-thousand strong team that are currently battling the inferno.
