Justin Milne has resigned as chairman of the ABC. It comes after two days of intense pressure over his position and concerns about political pressure and interference. Mr Milne says his decision is not an admission he failed to protect the interests of the national broadcaster and he says he has never sent an email to former managing director Michelle Guthrie asking her to sack senior journalist Emma Alberici. The ABC board is meeting now to decide who will be the acting chairman.

US president Donald Trump is maintaining support for supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, despite fresh accusations of sexual misconduct being levelled against the judge. In a sworn statement Julie Swetnick alleges Mr Kavanaugh and his friends were involved in the drugging and sexual assault of girls at house parties in the 1980s. Mr Kavanaugh rejects the allegations.

A British investigative journalism website has published what it says is the real identity of one of the Russian intelligence officers suspected of the Salisbury nerve agent poisoning. The Bellingcat group claims the man who was named as Ruslan Boshirov is actually Colonel Anatoliy Chepiga. Earlier this month, UK investigators identified Mr Boshirov as a Russian intelligence officer.
