Extreme fire warnings are in place and health authorities are urging people to drink plenty of water and try to stay cool.

The US president Donald Trump has made a surprise Christmas visit to American troops in Iraq. It's his first trip to a conflict zone after nearly two years as president, and comes just days after he announced a withdrawal of American troops from neighboring Syria. Air Force One touched down west of Baghdad after an overnight flight from Washington, with first lady Melania Trump also on board. President Trump thanked the troops for their near elimination of the Islamic State group.

Wall Street has rebounded from its worst Christmas Eve sell-off ever — with the Dow Jones surging almost 1,100 points. Despite the gains, it is still the worst December for US markets since the height of the Great Depression in 1931. Amazon's share price soared 9.5 per cent after reporting that it achieved a "record-breaking" sales this holiday season. The local Australian share market is expected to follow the strong lead.
