Chinese authorities have urged the United States to cautiously handle Taiwan-related issues. The comments follow a U.S. statement about Under-Secretary of State Keith Krach's planned visit to Taiwan. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson urged the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and stop making official exchanges with the Taiwan region. The United Arab Emirates has approved a China-developed COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. The approval comes after six weeks of human trials in the Gulf state. UAE officials say the vaccine will be available to the country's frontline workers who are at the highest risk of contracting the virus. They also say the vaccine has been tested on 31 thousand volunteers, including one thousand suffering from chronic diseases, and no complications have occurred after vaccination. Authorities in Greece say 135 cases of coronavirus have been discovered among migrants and refugees on the island of Lesbos after several thousand people were tested. The infections were discovered after 5,000 migrants were left homeless by a fire at a refugee camp and were then escorted by police to a temporary new site. The spike in cases prompted the government to impose additional restrictive measures in greater Athens this week. The World Health Organization says the number of COVID-19 cases reported every week in Europe now exceeds those reported in March when the pandemic first peaked. WHO regional director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge says the rising case numbers should serve as "a wake-up call" for everyone. He says the past two weeks have witnessed more than half of the countries in the region reporting a rise of greater than 10 percent in new cases, with seven countries experiencing doubling of caseloads. The fastest rate of increase was among adults aged 25 to 49 years old. The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, one of the hardest hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic, has authorized the restart of in-person classes at universities starting from Oct. 7. Classes throughout the educational system have been held online since the last week of March, as part of lockdown measures designed to contain the outbreak. A recent public opinion poll shows that 80 percent of residents in the city are against a return to in-person classes for fear of more infections. Congressional investigators say that Boeing and U.S. aviation regulators failed in their duty to ensure traveler safety when they designed and certificated the 737 Max airliner, which crashed twice within months, killing over 300 people in total. The planes have been grounded worldwide for nearly two years. The U.S. report concludes that Boeing prioritized profits over safety in rushing to complete the design of the plane, and the Federal Aviation Administration was guilty of "grossly insufficient oversight" in giving final approval for that model. A Utah police officer has been charged with aggravated assault after ordering a dog to attack a Black man. Jeffery Ryans had already complied with the officer's order to raise his hands after the police responded to a domestic dispute call earlier this year. Prosecutors say officer Nickolas Pearce forced Ryans to his knees and ordered the dog to bite him. Body camera footage showed Pearce praising the dog as it latched onto Ryans' leg. Ryans required surgery and his attorney said the injuries could lead to amputation. The Japanese Olympics Organizing Committee says Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has a strong commitment to the Tokyo Olympic Games. Education Minister Koichi Hagiuda says Japan is committed to make the Olympics and Paralympics a success. The delayed games will open on July 23, 2021. A plan to simplify the Tokyo Games will be ready by the end of this month. Specifics about fans, quarantines, border controls and testing will not be forthcoming until the end of the year or even early next year. |
