An emergency warning is in place for the Drake fire near Tenterfield in New South Wales as firefighters struggle with worsening conditions in the state's north. The fire is burning in bushland in the vicinity of Drake, Tabulam and the Bruxner highway. The highway is now closed in both directions between Drake and Sandy Hill. The Rural Fire Service says residents in the fire path north east of Drake have been told it's too late to leave.

The Energy Minister is playing down the risks from the drone attacks on two Saudi oil facilities, saying there's no immediate threat to Australia's fuel supplies. Drone attacks at two oil processing facilities have knocked out half of Saudi Arabia's total oil production, or more than five per cent of global supply. But Angus Taylor says he doesn't expect there to be a major impact on oil prices in Australia.

Lawyers have described today's multi-million dollar class action settlement with Volkswagen and Audi as a significant victory for Australian consumers. The car companies have agreed to pay out between $87 and $127 million to Australian car owners over the global diesel emissions scandal. Around 100,000 Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda vehicles in Australia were installed with VW's notorious emissions cheating software.

The society's latest drowning report reveals 276 people drowned over the year to June. Males are still over-represented, accounting for more than 80 per cent of drowning deaths.
