Looking for new music to ease the transition from summer into fall. Local Spins editor and publisher John Sinkevics has you covered. He joined Stateside with an update on three West Michigan artists that he recommends checking out.

Brother Adams

Holland-based band Brother Adams recently-released Chatter, its first full-length studio album in four years. Sinkevics describes the trio's genre as folk-punk and compares their early style to Modest Mouse.

I think they've really honed their sound in a kind of groovy way, Sinkevics said. There's some more psychedelic elements to what they're performing now, and some more eclectic sounds and some experimental, edgy stuff too.

They play The Stache inside The Intersection in downtown Grand Rapids on Sept. 6, opening for Dirtwire, and at the SpeakEZ Lounge in Grand Rapids on October 23.

Jordan Hamilton

Hip-hop and soul cellist Jordan Hamilton's new studio album My Thoughts Are was released last month. Sinkevics says that the album's message is hopeful, political, [and] inspirational. He adds that Hamilton has become an in-demand performer in Michigan.

Hamilton is also part of the Kalamazoo-based hip-hop ensemble the Last Gasp Collective.

Jordan Hamilton will be playing September 13 with Eli Kahn at the Yote Social Lab in Grand Rapids, with Eli Kahn again September 14 at B. Nektar Meadery in Ferndale, and September 20-22 at the Earthwork Harvest Gathering outside Lake City.

Boy From School

Grand Rapids-based indie rock-pop group Boys From School just released its first studio album White Hot Light. Sinkevics says that their sound isimpressively arranged and produced considering how young the band is.

[Boys From School is] a fusion of rock, pop, and some electronic sounds, [and] recalls elements of the 1980s, Sinkevics said.

Boy From School is taking a break from performing after their recent album-release show in Grand Rapids, but you can find their music on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, and other music streaming platforms.
