While football in China can trace its roots back to thousands of years ago, the modern game was brought to the country by British sailors at the end of the 19th century, and has until recent years struggled to establish a professional structure.

In May 2004, the China Football Association Super League(CSL) kicked off(开球). Its goals are to promote high quality and high level competition, introduce advanced managerial concepts to the market, encourage the influx of higher quality foreign coaches and players, and gradually establish the European system for player registrations and transfers.
