On that day, they let us out of school

But there's something I've never told anyone.

The phone rang.

电话响了

Oh, God.

天啊

I couldn't pick up the phone. I just couldn't do it.

我没法接电话 我就是接不了

It rang, and rang, and rang, and I couldn't move.

电话一直响 一直响 我却动不了

I wanted to pick it up, but I couldn't. I just couldn't.

我想去接 但接不了 接不了

The answering machine came on. There was a beep.

Then I heard dad's voice.

He needed me and I couldn't pick it up.

I was scared. I just couldn't do it.

"Are you there?" He asked nine times.

I know because I've counted.

And why didn't he say "Anyone"?

Is anyone there? You is just one person.

I think he knew I was there.

Maybe he kept saying it to

give me time to be brave enough to pick up.

You can hear people in the background crying.

Then it cut off.

For what? For not being able to pick up?

因为什么 没能接起电话吗

For not being able to tell anyone.

因为我没勇气告诉其他人

Of course I forgive you.

当然能原谅

I can't tell you how much better that makes me feel.
