英国新闻听力 科特迪瓦电影业迎来春天（在线收听）

When it comes to cinema and Africa, there is one country that dominates, Nigeria. Noliywood even beats Hollywood in terms of the number of films it produces every year. But other countries are also beginning to make their mark. For the first time in nearly three decades, a film from Ivory Coast was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in France in 2014.

“My name is Run”, says the lead character in the trailer of the film of the same name. Produced on a budget of 2.1 million US dollars, “Run” is Ivory Coast’s most expensive film yet. And the money has paid off. After being screened at Cannes, it was shown in Toronto, LA and Melborne.

To be at Cannes to see the other celebrities, actors from America, Canada, Switzerland and elsewhere, it was incredible. I think for an African actor, it was just wow. It was wow.

Ivory Coast used to be the cultural hub of francophone Africa. But years of civil war buried that title along with its film industry. For three years on from the end of the conflict, Ivory Coast is moving not only economically, it had one of the highest growth rates in the world last year, but also culturally. Every week, there is a new exhibition. And now “Run” is opening the door for the film world, too. “Run”, a political thriller about the assassination of the country’s Prime Minister opens in both Ivory Coast and France this month. Shot in Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, it was Ivorian director Philippe Lac?te’s first feature film.

In this film where there is a lot of young and new actors from Ivory Coast, 80% of the crew was African, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ivory Coast. So it’s important for Africa and for Ivory Coast.

But there is still some way to go. Most cinemas here were shut down during the war and turned into churches. Only two remain. There is little training available for up and coming directors. And living as an actoris tough.

We make it with our love. Our love has been rewarded by going to Cannes and other festivals. We just hope that one day, we can live on our art.

Offers of new films and sitcoms have been flooding in. And director Lac?te is already working on his second feature film. The Ivorian industry may not be booming yet, but it is definitely going somewhere.
