Computers can be better at predicting our personality than our friends and family.

That's the conclusion scientists in Cambridge have drawn from an experiment with tens of thousands of volunteers.

Facebook was a social media researchers use to see how well computers could judge people's personalities.

It studied the likes of more than 80,000 people to discover their broad personality traits.

And it did so with great success.

After analyzing just ten likes,

the computer was more accurate at judging someone's personality than their work colleagues.

After 150 likes, it knew people better than their own mothers.

And it only took 300 likes to be more accurate than a person's spouse.

One of the researchers David Sitwell says information could be used to target advertizing to suit personality types.

Let's say, I'm viewing a charity website.

And I want to find out about the charity.

then the charity could give me more pictures and more messages sort of from the people that I'm trying to help.

He concedes that some people may find the idea creepy,

and believes that social media websites would have to be upfront with users if they adopt the technology.

Other possible applications would be on dating websites or in recruitment.

But researchers see there is a lot that computer can't judge, such as whether or not someone is interesting.

Most of us celebrated the new year two weeks ago.
