Last September, the SEC sued Musk and Tesla after the electric car company's CEO made false and misleading statements on Twitter.

The settlement required Musk to get approval for tweets related to Tesla's business, while paying a hefty $20 million fine.

But the SEC also fined Tesla for $20 million, and forced Musk to step down as the company's chairman.
