Recently, their specialised diet has had dire consequences.

Bamboo has a bizarre life cycle,

竹子有着难以预测的生命周期

flowering infrequently, sometimes only once every hundred years or so.

But when flowering does occur,it's on a massive scale,

and it's followed bythe death ofall of the plants.

Sometimes an entire bamboo forest may die.
