She was started in the 17th century

她的创作始于十七世纪

and one story is she's the work originally of a female sculptor

据说她原本是一位女性雕刻家的作品

because only a woman could quite capture the Virgin like this.

因为只有女人才能捕捉到圣母的这副模样

But she's been added to ever since -

但至此之后 她被加上了许多冠服

when she got that splendid gold crown,

她得到这顶华丽的金皇冠

when she started wearing those very big capes,

她开始穿戴这些巨大披肩

and she's got a large wardrobe,

她还有个大衣柜

and she often changes her dress.

经常会换裙子

The every day care and attention paid to this statue

对这座雕像日复一日的悉心养护

might at first seem a little odd.

起初看起来会有些奇怪

But she was intended

但她被创作成

to have an aura of humanity about her.

拥有一种人性的光辉

Her tears may be made of glass

她的眼泪可能是由玻璃制成

but her hair is real human hair.

但她的头发用的是真发

Her exposed flesh, that's her head and hands,

她暴露在外的头部和手

are made of wood

是由木头制成的

because they thought wood was much warmer than marble,

因为他们觉得木头比大理石更温暖

was more organic.

更富有生机

And, in other ways,

在其他方面

she's treated as if she's a human being,

她被当作人类来对待

so, no-one apart from the nuns

除修女之外的任何人

are allowed to take her clothes off.

都不能为她脱衣

In many ways,

she's not finished but a work in progress

她仍未被完成 而是半成品

which only becomes complete

只有在一年之中最神圣的时候

for a single night at the most sacred time of year...

At Easter.

也就是复活节

The holy cross is presented to the crowd

神圣十字架呈现在世人面前

and hooded penitents begin to march.

戴着面罩的忏悔者开始行进

For many, this is highly charged and emotional.

对很多人来说这是激情澎湃的时刻

Now they wait,

现在他们在等待

longing for the extraordinary moment

盼望着圣母在门口出现的

when the Virgin appears at the threshold,

这一伟大时刻

and a moment of transformation is at hand.

Carried on a throne, she begins her journey into the night.
