1.    ATA Airlines strands thousands of passengers after it shuts down in a second trip through bankruptcy. The carrier is blaming the loss of military charter business. ATA flies mostly between the West Coast and Hawaii.

2.    Federal officials are defending their actions to prevent the failure of Wall Street’s Bear Sterns quickly selling to banking giant JPMorgan Chase. They say doing anything else would have sent shock waves to the financial system.

3.    In Zimbabwe, a top opposition party official says police have raided its offices in what he called the start of a crackdown. The opposition says it has won the presidential election but no official count is out.

4. This woman in Australia is recovering after an eight-foot crocodile grabbed her leg, pulling her into the water. She    was snatched from its jaws by her husband who jumped on the crocodile’s head and poked its eyes.
