I don't really know how well the book sold, but I think it's fair to say that it's obscure. Is it possible that the public wasn't eager to accept the side of your sensibility that it represented? I was surprised by the violence, the allusions to sexual assault — just the darkness in it. I would venture to say, based on some encounters that I have had on Twitter, that there is a population of people who aren't willing to see me displaying an aspect of my character that perhaps goes against their idea of who I am. They feel like they have the right to opine on who I should be, what I should be and should say and should not say. That's an interesting part of this dynamic of fame. However, I spent a lot of time and energy discovering, defining, and divining who I am and how I want to live my life. What you do with what I put out there is your business. What I put out there is my business. Do people often give you a hard time on Twitter? When I'm in that mode of calling America into question for its transgressions against people of color and marginalized people, I get blowback. Some of it comes from people who don't want to accept that from me or any actor. It's "Shut up and dribble." You know, in May I said, "Happy Memorial Day" on Twitter, and right away somebody said: "Happy? How about solemn or otherwise reflective?" I subtweeted him, "How about we not police how I observe the holiday?" I felt bad because I knew that guy was going to catch hell. But you come for me, you might want to bring a fire extinguisher. Here's something for you: This quarterback and former "Jeopardy!" guest host is currently engaged in a dispute with his longtime N.F.L. team. Aaron Rodgers. I'm sorry, the correct response is "Who is Aaron Rodgers?" Holy (expletive)! You got me. |
