1.Rest for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor after three days of questioning by senators. She won praise from Democrats and Republicans, but some lawmakers questioned speeches and writings on the role of a judge. A vote to confirm could come before the August recess.

2.In New Jersey, two police officers are critically wounded during a shootout. Three other officers treated and released. It happened during a police stakeout of two armed robbery suspects who were both killed.

3.Local Taliban commanders are threatening to kill an American soldier unless the military stops air-strikes in parts of Afghanistan. The soldier disappeared from his post with no explanation.

4.Chicago's iconic Sears Tower is now the Willis Tower, named for a London-based insurance broker that snared the naming rights and space in the building. Original tenant, Sears Roebuck and Co. moved out years ago but the name stuck.
