1. The Senate is expected to vote today to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. If confirmed, Sotomayor will become the first Hispanic justice, and just the third woman justice. Sotomayor will replace Justice David Souter. 2. A South Florida newlywed remains behind bars after allegedly hiring an undercover police officer to kill her husband. Police say 26-year-old Dalia Dippolito tried to offer the officer 1,200 dollars for a handgun and another 3,000 over 6 months for a murder. Dippolito was charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder. 3. The Insurance Institute for Highway safety says out of the 6 most popular midsize sedans, none of them gets a top rating in bumper safety crash tests. Only the Mazda 6 got an "acceptable" rating. The result is based on the average cost to repair front, rear and corner bumpers following a 6-mile-an-hour crash. 4. The mayor of Hiroshima is urging global leaders to back President Barack Obama's call to abolish nuclear weapons. Today marks the 64th anniversary of the day the Enola Gay dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb killed an estimated 140,000 people. |
