 2. Despite the blizzard, some people in D.C. did venture outside for a chance to play. Snowballs were flying in normally bustling Dupont Circle, a major Washington thoroughfare. Hundreds of people gathered for a snowball fight with words spreading through Facebook and Twitter.

 3. An Iraqi defense official says Shiite militants have released a tape of a kidnapped Iraqi-American contractor, who was abducted from central Baghdad last month.

 4. The Washington Zoo's former panda Tai Shan spent a peaceful night in his new home in China. His keeper speaks English. But one of his first tasks will be to teach Tai Shan a few mandarin phrases.
