South African president Jacob Zuma has addressed a packed stadium in Soweto, wrapping up his party’s election campaign. The latest polls are predicting a 63% victory for the African National Congress, almost the same percentage it won five years ago.
No other party in South Africa could pull off a celebration on this scale. 95,000 people inside Soweto’s FNB stadium. Several thousand more outside. President Jacob Zuma’s last official visit here was excruciating, he was booed during Nelson Mandela’s memorial service. But at the end of 3 and a half months of campaigning - cheers, for a leader on the cusp of another convincing electoral victory.
Joined by most, though not all of the ruling party’s alliance partners. Relations have been strained at times in the past 5 years. But it’s still in one piece and pressing home its unity1 to voters at the crucial moment.
This is the climax2 of what has, in theory, been the most challenging campaign ever for the ANC. There’s a more competitive political environment - and it’s had to deal with the Nkandla scandal as well. But the polls still predict a landslide3. Some voters might be ticked off - but that doesn’t mean they’ll vote for someone else.
Many left before the president spoke4 - but still wearing the party colours. And for those who stayed, a masterstroke of electioneering. After the 7th May, dissenting5 voices may begin to pipe up. But for now, despite it all, there’s only room for one.
